LANGUAGE ASSISTANT COURSE 2022-2023

KAYLA VILLARREAL

Hello my name is Kayla Villarreal and I am happy to say I am one of the language assistants this year at IES Diego de Guzman y Quesada. I am from the United States - born and raised in Miami, Florida. In Miami it is very tropical all year round and we are lucky enough to have many beaches close by. I just graduated from school at the University of South Florida (in Tampa, Florida) where I recieved my bachelor degree in Advertising and Public Relations. During school I worked as a barista at different coffee shops and from that I formed a true passion for coffee and that industry as a whole. I truly loved what I studied and have worked in social media marketing before starting here! Since I studied advertising I also love looking at all the different ads I see when traveling.

Back in 2019 I had the chance to study abroad in Florence, Italy and that was one of the best experiences of my life! I love art and art history so it was so cool to see all of architecture and museums in Italy.  That trip made me want to see more of the world and experience other cultures which is why I decided to become a language assistant. I am excited to live in Huelva and experience the culture here (and to drink a lot of coffee).  I´m looking forward to helping students practice english and learn about my culture. Fingers crossed I learn spanish by the end of this year!

LEWIS BYRNE AND YANET AKALU

LEWIS BYRNE (LU)

Hi! My name is Lu and I’m lucky enough to be one of the English language assistants this year here at I.E.S Diego de Guzmán y Quesada. I come from Edinburgh, the capital city of Scotland, which is a relatively small city with a mixture of beautiful old architecture and stunning green spaces. I am here on a year abroad from my University in Glasgow (Scotland’s second city) where I study Spanish and French. As well as these I speak varying levels of Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, Icelandic, German, Dutch, as well as a little Italian, Estonian, and very very basic Russian. While languages are my main passion, I also enjoy walking, knitting, cooking, visiting museums and galleries, and spending time with my amazing friends! Moving forward, my dream is to continue working with languages in either Norway, Sweden, or Denmark! I am very happy to be here in Huelva and in DGQ and am extremely excited to help the students in IB and 4oESO to; improve their speaking skills, broaden their horizons and help them to see and create links between Scotland and Spain, all through the study of English!

YANET AKALU

Hey! My name is Yanet and I am one of this year´s Conversation Assistants at I.E.S Diego de Guzmán y Quesada. I am from London, the UK´s capital city. It is a lively city, popular amongst tourists, and known for many famous sites such as Big Ben and the London Eye. I have one younger sister and a dog called ma'ar, which means honey in my home language, Tigrinya. In my free time I like to read, walk my dog and spend time with my friends.

I graduated from The London School of Economics and Political Science in September 2020 with a Bachelors degree in International History with Spanish. My course took an interdisciplinary approach to History, and I focused mainly on the 19th and 20th centuries. In my Spanish classes, I was able to learn about Spanish/Latin American cultures and societies, and I visited Barcelona with my class. Pre-pandemic I travelled regularly, throughout Europe but also beyond. Most recently I have visited New York and Shanghai, where I learned some Mandarin. I am looking forward to immersing myself into Andalusian culture in particular, and helpìng students with their English skills :)

ERICA TEBBS AND PAOLO VINLUAN

Hello! My name is Erica Tebbs and I am a Conversation Assistant at I.E.S. Diego de Guzmán y Quesada this year. I am from Jacksonville, Florida, U.S.A. which, like Huelva, is a city on the Atlantic coast known for its beaches and warm climate year-round. It is a large city with many different neighborhoods. I lived in Mandarin, an inland residential area near the St. John ́s River. I am lucky to live in the same city as much of my extended family! I am 23 years old.

I graduated from the University in Florida, located in Gainesville, Florida, in May of 2019 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology and a minor in Spanish. My focus was in Social Psychology, which studies thinking and behavior in groups and relationships, and explores the influences of norms, culture and society. I studied abroad for a semester in San Sebastian, Basque Country, focusing on Spanish language acquisition and Basque culture.

I take interest in these subjects in my personal life too, as I love to travel and experience new cultures and ways of life. I am also passionate about language, so I am excited to pass on English skills and U.S. culture to the students while also immersing myself in the warm and lively Andalusian culture!

LANGUAGE ASSISTANT COURSE 2017-2018

Hi there!

My name is Michael Boyle and I am the language assistant at Diego Guzman y Quesada for this school year. I come from New Zealand but have been travelling since the beginning of 2016. I graduated from AUT University in Auckland at the end of 2015 with a Degree in Sport and Recreation, with a major in Outdoor Education.

My studies involved learning leadership and facilitation skills with groups doing outdoor sports such as whitewater kayaking, hiking, rock climbing and survival skills. As New Zealand is world famous for the scenery and natural landscapes which we have there. While I am here in Huelva I hope to get out and explore as much of the province as I can and enjoy the national parks of Andalucia.

I came to Huelva after a year as a language assistant in Mallorca. Inbetween my time in Mallorca and arriving in Huelva I was in Italy teaching English through theatre and performance. I have also spent time recently walking through Scotland and Germany and going Scuba Diving in Malta.

Like most New Zealanders, I love Rugby and I am looking forward to teaching some rugby skills and other things typical from New Zealand. With special presentations about our summertime Christmas and a cultural day, teaching something about the indigenous Maori culture of New Zealand.

LANGUAGE ASSISTANT COURSE 2017-2018

Miss Mollie Mcgreevy is our current language assistant. Here you are her presentation and if you click on the picture of the file at the bottom of this page, you can have access to her presentations on some interesting topics regarding British culture.

My name is Mollie McGreevy and I am 20 years old. I am from a town in the south of England called Bournemouth. Bournemouth is a fairly sized sea side town that is very popular in England, we have an annual air festival which brings people from all over the country to come and watch an incredible air display over the sea. We have long sandy beaches that are spread across Bournemouth towards the start of the Jurassic coast. I am an English assistant in a Spanish primary and secondary school in the South of Spain as part of my year abroad for University which is founded through the British Council.

I go to the University of Portsmouth and study Combined Modern Foreign languages which is a 4 year course. I decided to come to Spain and assist with English learning in Spanish schools, so that I can gain teaching experience and learn about a new culture. In the future, I look forward to being able to look back on this amazing experience and I hope I can inspire others and future students to take part in this programme and keep the bilingual programme going.
